SET 2008

Even though agile methods are becoming ever more popular, and Agile is moving into the main stream, the role of management in Agile has received little attention.

Even though agile methods are becoming ever more popular, and Agile is moving into the main stream, the role of management in Agile has received little attention. To make things worse, agile change initiatives often start in IT/development with senior managers being largely unaware of Agile’s potential and its impact to the enterprise.

This talk explores how the role of managers changes in Agile and enables managers to lead an agile change initiative acting as role models. It presents agile leadership principles that provide concrete guidance and draw from insights from Lean Thinking. The talk introduces leadership principles such as empowerment and respect, empirical management, servant-leadership, continuous improvement and standardisation. It discusses how the principles interrelate and how they should be applied.
